90th Anniversary Open House

On Thursday, October 25, 2018, the Annie Porter Ainsworth Memorial Library will celebrate and mark its 90th anniversary with an Open House kickoff to our anniversary celebration!

Library Director, Jessica Godfrey, who came to the Ainsworth Memorial Library three years ago, is often asked about the Library’s history with many people believing that the building was a repurposed home.  However, the building was built with the intention of being a library.  It was built in memory of local lawyer Danforth E. Ainsworth's wife, Annie Porter Ainsworth in 1928.  Sadly, Danforth Ainsworth passed before seeing its completion.  Mrs. Bertha Knowlton was hired as the first librarian and Mr. Levin Wilder was hired as janitor.  The Library officially opened on October 25, 1928, with a Grand Dedication Ceremony!

While Danforth E. Ainsworth may have initiated the inception of the Library, the additions and improvements have all been made on the foundation of strong community support.  For nearly 30 years the Friends of Ainsworth Memorial Library made generous contributions and reliably volunteered at the Library. Today, the Library has created partnerships with the Sandy Creek School and other local non-for-profits that benefit the entire community.  In addition, the Library hosts over 100 free programs every year varying from movies, crafts, arts and music, Summer Reading and of course, Little Readers, our weekly story time! Despite the many additions and changes, Danforth E. Ainsworth’s first vision for the library is still a valued guiding influence on the Library’s purpose.

Join our Open House 90th Anniversary Celebration on Thursday, October 25, 2018 from 10-6.
